1. Avoid Light
Cannabinoids are the compounds in cannabis that give the user the desired effects when smoked or ingested. But did you know cannabinoids break down in the presence of light? In fact, the reason the sticky, resinous trichomes- or crystals- on your cannabis flower often have a yellowish or amber hue to them is that in the late flowering stages of growth, the plant produces keratins in the trichomes to protect the precious cannabinoids from UV light breakdown. 2. Avoid Heat
Terpenes are the essential oils in cannabis that are responsible for many of the desirable effects and characteristics associated with smoking cannabis flower. Terpenes are most notably responsible for the fantastic aromas they impart to your flower! They work in conjunction with cannabinoids to produce what is commonly referred to as the “entourage effect.” The entourage effect is simply the relationship between different compounds in cannabis- such as terpenes and cannabinoids- and how those compounds work together to form new mechanisms of interaction with our body’s endocannabinoid system. Terpenes are very delicate! Temperatures of 70 degrees Fahrenheit or more will lead to the rapid destruction of terpenes in your cannabis flower. As such, your flower should be stored in a cool place.
3. Optimize Moisture levels
Cannabis flower that is too dry will turn to dust in its storage container. Cannabis flower that is too moist does not combust in an enjoyable manner. A flower that has been stored in an appropriate climate range will burn JUST RIGHT. The rule of thumb for storing cannabis flower is 55-65 degrees Fahrenheit, while proper Relative Humidity for cannabis storage is 45-62%.
If your cannabis flower is too moist, simply leaving it out in the air in a dry environment should do the trick. Alternatively, an apple slice or orange peel can be added to your sealed container to rehabilitate flower that is undesirably dry. The moisture from the fruit portion will equalize to the dry flower in the container.
