What is the difference between industrial hemp and agricultural hemp?

What is industrial hemp?
Industrial hemp is a term that dates back to the 1960’s and refers to hemp that is cultivated to be used as a material to make things like finished goods and food. On the food side of the discussion, industrial hemp is used to make healthy, consumable foods such as hemp hearts. On the other hand, industrial hemp can be used to make an almost endless amount of finished goods and textiles.
Since hemp is in fact stronger than cotton, industrial hemp can be used to make textiles, paper products, rope, bioplastics, blankets, livestock bedding, clothing and many other things. Compared to agricultural hemp, industrial hemp is also a phenomenal source of fiber and has a much stronger tensile strength than its agricultural counterpart. Industrial hemp generally is not grown to have buds, which is where all the desired “results and effects” live for somebody looking to use CBD for personal use.
Considering industrial hemp is not being grown for human consumption, such as smoking, it doesn’t need a perfect climate and can be grown in areas that are able to simply produce high yields of corn. Generally, this includes most of the Southeast, Southwest and Northeast United States regions.
What is agricultural hemp?
Agricultural hemp is hemp that is cultivated specifically for consumption or for extraction of CBD. Unlike industrial hemp that is grown to be used as a physical part of a product, agricultural hemp is grown to be consumed by people for desired effects such as pain relief, anxiety reduction, a sleep aid or as a pick-me-up at social events.
Agricultural hemp is cultivated with specific “results” in mind. It all starts with the terpenes and ends with the result you get from smoking hemp or ingesting it in a variety of different ways. Agricultural hemp terpenes are the aromatic compounds that are found in hemp (or CBD) flower. These compounds are what make up the signature scent of a hemp plant. Depending on the strain, terpenes give off strong scents such as cannabis, pine, lavender and orange just to name a few.
Once harvested, agricultural hemp is consumed as a smokeable flower or used to have CBD oils extracted from the flower to be used in a variety of CBD products.
Since agricultural hemp requires a little more “science” since it’s being cultivated for the buds that contain all the desired results for the end user, the climate needs to be more of a mild and more humid environment, such as the climate of the Pacific Northwest.
